Thyroid cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules are common but usually are not cancer. There are different types of thyroid cancer. Age, gender, and being exposed to radiation can affect the risk of thyroid cancer.
There are some risk factors which increases the chance of having cancer:
1. Gender:
Thyroid Cancer occurs about 3 times more often in women than men. Women are diagnosed with 3 of every 4 thyroid cancers.
2. Age:
Thyroid cancer can occur at any age, but about two-thirds of all cases are found in people between the ages of 40 and 55. Risk of thyroid cancer peaks in the 40s and 50s for women and for men it can occur in their 60s and 70s.
3. Hereditary Conditions:
Several inherited conditions have been linked to different types of thyroid cancer, as has a family history like 2 out of 10 medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTCs) result from inheriting an abnormal gene.
4. Radiation Exposer:
Exposure to moderate levels of radiation to the head and neck may increase the risk of thyroid cancer.
5. Diet Low in Iodine:
Iodine is needed for normal thyroid function. Follicular thyroid cancers are more common for the people whose diets are low in iodine. The correct intake of Iodine is necessary to prevent Follicular Thyroid Cancer.
When you are diagnosed with thyroid cancer than doctors take necessary measures to cure cancer completely or if it is in the primary stage then they try to control the growth of the cancer cells.
There are some advanced cancer treatments which can be used to cure thyroid cancer:
1. Surgical Treatment:
Surgical Treatment is done to remove the cancer-causing tumor from the thyroid part to restore the appearance and health of the patient.
2. Radiation Therapy:
In radiation therapy, there is a tomotherapy system that delivers radiation in small beamlets, enabling the doctor to devise a treatment plan that delivers an optimal dose of radiation to your tumor. These radiation beams destroy the tumor from the thyroid part of the body.
3. Proton Therapy:
The precise nature of proton therapy makes it an excellent option for the treatment of certain head and neck cancers. Proton therapy delivers highly effective doses of radiation directly into the tumor, decreasing the risk of damage to delicate tissue in the thyroid gland.
4. Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy is used to destroy the tumor cells which can further result in thyroid cancer. These tumors need to be killed at an earlier stage so that the growth of the tumors can be checked.
5. Immuno Therapy:
In this Immunotherapy drugs, bacteria, vaccines, or other methods are used to stimulate the immune system and/or kill or damage the cancer cells.
